LeapXperience 2: TACKLING FOOD WASTE TOGETHER
LeapXperience Batch 2 was started in August 2023. Collaborating with FAS (Forum Anak Surabaya) this batch was joined by middle and high school students from FAS and schools in Surabaya.
Using the SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production as its theme, the students explored some challenges in its smaller part: Food Waste. We have chosen SDG 12 on Food Waste as the focal point due to its critical importance in addressing both global sustainability and local challenges. For 5 months with 16 meetings, they investigated the key challenges in food waste and worked on the solutions, supported by Garda Pangan, Rumah Kompos under the Department of Environment in Surabaya, and also PD Pasar Surya as our chosen communities support.
These solutions were presented in front of international students from some countries like the Philippines, Malaysia, Oman, Cambodia and Myanmar in a special virtual event for changemakers.

Solution:
campaigning Takakura method (a composs made from food scraps) as a solution to food waste
In our neighborhood, there’s a pressing lack of awareness regarding the potential for small-scale initiatives to tackle food waste. To address this, Vianney launched a campaign to promote the Takakura method—a simple and effective composting technique using food scraps. By introducing this method to families in the community by means of video that is so easy to share, she aimed to demonstrate how easy it is to turn food waste into valuable compost for gardens or planters.

Food Awareness: A Campaign to Reduce Food Waste in SMP Saim Surabaya
Solution:
making posters and putting them in school canteen
Azalea was mind blown by the excessive food wastage during lunchtime in the school canteen. To address this, she gave a solution centered around raising awareness among students about portion control and reducing food waste. Her strategy involves creating visually appealing posters to be displayed prominently in the canteen. These posters will emphasize the importance of taking only what they can eat and encouraging students to be mindful of their portion sizes. By using clear and nice graphics, she aimed to capture students’ attention and effectively convey the message.
